About

Eckley B. Coxe

Eckley B. Coxe

Sophia was married to a brilliant engineer who came to Northeastern Pennsylvania to run the family coal mining business, which he not only ran successfully, but also was the holder of over a hundred engineering mining patents.  Sophia, unlike the other coal barons’ wives took a vital and active interest in the welfare of the miner’s workers and their families.  Her benefactions were a thousand-fold and proved necessary and important in an era when social legislation had failed to keep pace with the industrialization of America.   She kept up her charitable works throughout her life giving away 90% of her income and living on 10%.
